RESUMEN
Una atenta mirada a los sistemas de Educación Superior en América Latina, da cuenta de un
proceso de robustecimiento progresivo desde finales del siglo XX, hasta lo que lleva corrido este
siglo XXI. Algunos expertos asocian esta circunstancia a la pre ocupación conjunta que ha n
mostrado los diversos actores sociales involucrados en este ámbito de la sociedad, tales como
el Estado, el mercado, las familias y, los mismos actores individuales. En Ecuador, se pueden
analizar diversas variables que han propiciado una evolución positiva del acceso a las
universidades, en el transcurso de la tercera década del siglo XXI de manera que, se pueda
tener una visión holística de este fenómeno. Ese es el objetivo planteado en este artículo,
partiendo de la aplicación de un enfoque cualicuantitativo, y una estrategia metodológica que
incluye la aplicación de algunas herramientas propias del diseño documental y, estadísticas con
datos obtenidos de la página de la Senescyt; entre estas últimas, la aplicación de regresión lineal
múltiple para determinar la influencia de las variables en la inscripción universitaria, así como,
un análisis de patrones temporales, tendencias y brechas entre 2017 y 2022. Los recursos

estadísticos procuran documentar de manera mucho más didáctica y visible, la ampliación de la
cobertura institucional que se ha dado en el territorio ecuatoriano, a raíz de las políticas de
inclusión social puestas en práct ica para atraer al sistema educativo superior, muchos de esos
sectores de la población, tradicionalmente marginados, como es el caso de los indígenas y los
habitantes de zonas rurales. Este estudio permite así, tener una panorámica integral del
fenómeno enfocado, en donde se evidencia la intensificación de los esfuerzos para garantizar
que más personas tengan la oportunidad de acceder a la educación superior en el país.

Evolution of access to higher education in Ecuador: an analysis of trends and gaps
between 2017 and 2022
ABSTRACT
A careful look at the Higher Education systems in Latin America reveals a process of progressive
strengthening from the end of the 20th century to the present 21st century. Some experts
associate this circumstance with the joint concern shown by the various social actors involved in
this area of society, such as the State, the market, families and the individual actors themselves.
In Ecuador, various variables can be analyzed that have led to a positive evolution of access to
universities during the third decade of the 21st century to have a holistic view of this phenomenon.
This is the objective set out in thi s article, based on the application of a qualitative -quantitative
approach and a methodological strategy that includes the application of some tools of
documentary design and statistics with data obtained from the Senescyt website; Among the
latter, the application of multiple linear regression to determine the influence of the variables on
university enrollment, as well as an analysis of temporal patterns, trends and gaps between 2017
and 2022. The statistical resourc es seek to document in a much more didactic and visible way,
the expansion of institutional coverage that has occur red in the Ecuadorian territory, because of
the social inclusion policies put into practice to attract to the higher education system many of
those sectors of the population, traditionally marginalized, such as indigenous people and
inhabitants of rural areas. This study thus allows for a comprehensive overview of the
phenomenon in question, where the intensification of efforts to ensure that more people could
access higher education in the country is evident.

de redefinir o reorientar el papel que tiene la educación superior para impulsar o mantener, el
talento humano que contribuya con el desarrollo sostenible de las naciones en un contexto global
