Todos los meses, el Instituto Nacional de Aeronáutica Civil notifica a los controladores aeroportuarios y a las líneas comerciales que en determinadas horas del día lanzarán cohetones en las cabeceras de pista del aeropuerto Internacional Simón Bolívar de Maiquetía. No se trata de una celebra ción, sino de la única manera que han encontrado para espantar a los zamuros que permanentemente rondan en torno a los terminales aéreos, y que ponen en riesgo la operación de los aviones en el principal aeropuerto del país. Estas aves han sido la prin cipal causa de derribamiento de jets militares en Venezuela. Están allí pues alrededor de los aeropuertos, como el de Maiquetía, se han formado vertederos de basura, en contravención a las normas de seguridad emitidas por la Organización de Aviación Civil Internacional.
