Changes in the social skills of refugee children
Abstract. In a rapidly changing global context, developing children’s social skills
through physical activity is becoming increasingly important. e aim of this study
was to identify the characteristics of social skill development through physical activity
in refugee children attending organizations oering physical activity classes and to
analyze the characteristics of social skill changes during physical activity based on ob-
servational data. e research methods were based on a literature review and utilized
an observational experimental design. Nine children participated in the study, and
were observed during physical activity classes for 16 weeks, three times a week for 1
hour and 15 minutes each. e study found that 16 weeks of physical activity (foot-
ball) inuenced changes in refugee children’s social skills, including intrapersonal,
interpersonal, motor, and communication skills, which facilitated their integration
into the host society.
Keywords: refugee children, social skills, physical activity, social experiment.
INTRODUCTION
In today’s world, the issue of refugees is becoming increasingly relevant due to the mass
inux of refugees, whose migration is triggered by military conicts. In 2021, nearly 90 million
people worldwide were forced to ee their home countries, such as Ethiopia, Burkina Faso, Af-
ghanistan, Syria, Myanmar, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Furthermore,
on 24 February 2022, due to the war in Ukraine, 8,108,448 people were forced to leave their
home country (Operational Data Portal, 2023), whilst more than 7.1 million were internally
displaced. Poland, which borders Ukraine, has received the largest number of refugees compared
to other EU countries (Nazaruk et al., 2024).
Perhaps the most vulnerable group of refugees are children, who account for the largest
percentage of forced migration (Grandi, 2022; UN 2022; Jaroszewicz et al., 2022; Ocial Sta-
tistics Portal, 2023). Research indicates that 81.4 per cent of people experience a traumatic event
(e.g. a natural disaster, being in or eeing a war zone, sexual violence, etc.) during their lifetime
(Kvedaraite et al., 2022), and the impact of a traumatic event on a refugee causes physical and
emotional disorders. It has been proven that physical activity is an innovative tool enabling refu-
gees to integrate safely into the host country and adapt more easily to their new environment
(Whitley & Gould, 2011).
Globally, the number of sports programmes designed to promote various integration
processes is growing rapidly. Various physical activities, and team activities in particular, are an
excellent strategy for refugee children to cope with the various challenges of integration (Stura,
2019; Anderson et al., 2019; Robinson et al., 2019; Svensson et al., 2017; UN, 2019).
In a rapidly changing global context, the development of children’s social skills through
physical activity is becoming increasingly important (Opstoel et al., 2020). Social skills are
activated and rened only through interaction with one’s environment and direct engagement
