Como se vio antes, la imaginación es una facultad mental poco cono-
cida, por ello se ha dado un primer paso haciendo un esfuerzo para en-
tender su naturaleza, pero es insu! ciente, pues se necesita saber cómo
trabaja en el accionar humano. Realmente la imaginación desarrolla
su labor a través de cuatro operaciones importantes (Mendoza, 2006,
2011): simbolización, desplazamiento, prospección y combinación.
SIMBOLIZACIÓN
La simbolización es la operación que permite la creación de representa-
ciones de diferentes tipos; por medio de ella, la imaginación estructura
signos, fórmulas, modelos, esquemas, organigramas, mapas, dibujos,
diagramas y cosas por el estilo. Estos símbolos, como decía Ricoeur
(2008) tienen un referente (real) pero son abstractos. La simboliza-
ción es una operación muy activa en los sueños y ensoñaciones del ser
humano Freud (1993) decía que en los sueños no se usa tanto la forma
expositiva como las imágenes visuales (comparaciones y metáforas);
las obras poéticas están basadas en símbolos, y el lenguaje, tanto gestual
como oral, se basa en el desarrollo simbólico expresivo. Se puede decir
sin temor que el lenguaje humano es, en gran parte, producto de la ima-
ginación, y más especí! camente de la simbolización.
