El libro Emotion, Social Theory, and Social Structure (Cambridge University Press, 2001), del sociólogo Jack M. Barbalet, trata básicamente acerca de dos asuntos novedosos en la sociología actual. Por una parte, se examinan aspectos claves de la estructura social a través del desarrollo y la aplicación de las categorías de las emociones. De esta manera, temas como la racionalidad, la estructura de clase, la acción social, la conformidad social, los derechos básicos y los cambios sociales se consideran mediante unadiscusión de las emociones particulares o un grupo específico de emociones, a saber: el temor, el resentimiento, la venganza, la vergüenza y la confianza. Por otro lado, la aplicación de las categorías de las mencionadas emociones al análisis de los componentes de la estructura social, servirá para perfeccionar y afinar la teoría sociológica.
