The importance of digital skills in university education: a systematic review

Resumen
La educación superior en Perú y Latinoamérica afronta cambios debido a la digitalización y nuevas tendenc ias
del mercado actual. Las competencias digitales tienen un rol estraté gico para los estudiantes en su formación,
por ello los nuevos entornos buscan fortalecer la enseñanza y la inserción laboral. El presente artículo usa la guía
PRISMA 2020 y analiza la contribución de las herramientas digitales en las universidades. Se consideran estudios
publicados entre el 2020 y 2025 considerando brechas de acceso, actualización docente y curricular. La revisión
identifica que puntos se requieren ref orzar, como la actualización curricular para obtener una formación superior
de calidad y prospera para el país.

Abstract
Higher education in Peru and Latin America is facing significant changes due to digitization and new tre nds in
today's market. Digital skills p lay a strategic role in student training; therefore, contemporary educational
environments seek to strengthen both teaching processes and future job placement. This article uses the PRISMA
2020 guide and analyzes the contribution of digital tools in universities. Studies published between 2020 and 2025
are considered, taking into account access gaps, as well as teacher and curriculum updates. The review identifies
areas that need to be strengthened, especially curriculum updates, in order to achieve high-quality and prosperous
higher education for the country.

Introducción
Situación problemática mundial
En la actualidad, la transformación digital y el desarrollo de competencias digitales para los estudiantes
constituyen elementos estratégicos en las universidades, ya que no solo representan herramientas de apoyo, sino
también factores clave par a mejorar la em pleabilidad y promover la participación activa de los estudiantes en la
sociedad (UNESCO, 2024).
La digital ización, l a inteli gencia artificial y la brec ha d igital gen eran retos importantes en la educación
superior, los cuales deben alinearse con las demandas del mercado laboral en beneficio de los estudiantes (ONU,
2023). La educación superior no debe limitarse únicamente a la enseñanza de asignaturas, sino que también
debe incorporar mecanismos de alfabetización digital. En este sentido, Wang y López-Carrillo (2025) señalan que
las com petencias digitales deben considerarse transversales, permitiendo la adaptación a contextos lab orales
complejos. Asimismo, Chang et a l. (2024) sostienen que los currículos actuales se encuentran desfasados
respecto al desarrollo t ecnológico. Esta brecha afecta la empleabilidad, debido a que los egresados no cuentan
con las competencias digitales necesarias para incorporarse al mercado laboral contemporáneo. La educación
superior, como impulsora de la innovación y la economía, debe desem peñar un rol pedagógico que integr e el
desarrollo digital.
