ción intergeneracional del autoempleo informal.

Labor Mobility and Intergenerational
Transmission of Informal Self-Employment
The immediate social and domestic influences on self-employment
choices in Mexico are explored in this article. Specifically, it proposes that,
together with structural aspects of the economy, which have impeded the
creation of formal jobs, certain socio-cultural factors promote the choice of
self-employment. These factors can relate to generations of workers, given
that working parents tend to transmit certain informal human capital to
their offspring in two ways: first, through the inheritance of skills related to
specific occupational choices, and secondly, through their general adminis-
trative knowledge, such as the ability to work independently in a given occu-
pation. Due to the lack of sufficiently extensive and broad data sources (sur-
veys) that permit following the history of self-employed workers for several
generations, methodologically, this study considered a smaller sample size:
parents G-1 and children G-2 from the same family. The data is taken from
the National Study of Occupation and Employment (ENOE) 2010. Results
confirm that, regardless of economic pressures and institutional arrange-
ments, self-employed children come mainly from self-employed parents, in-
dicating the weight of non-economic factors in the intergenerational repro-
duction of informal self-employment.
