La novia del Xolotlán
Un corrido de aires festivos canta a Managua como la novia del Xolotlán, nombre del lago de sus orillas en lengua náhuatl. Una capital con una leyenda idílica, antes de que el terremoto de la medianoche del 22 de diciembre de 1972, hace ahora cuarenta años, la hiciera desaparecer; el Xolotlán, un lago de cristal, aunque fuera la cloaca de la ciudad; lagunas volcánicas de celofán, y de terciopelo, la sierra que la custodiaba desde el sur. Managua era una típica ca pital centroamericana de aires provincianos, de poco menos de 250.000 habitantes, calles estrechas, construcciones de taquezal y tejas de barro, entre algunos edificios que alojaban bancos y tiendas comerciales, que se podía recorrer a pie desde la loma de Tiscapa, asiento del poder de la familia Somoza, hasta el lago Xolotlán, y donde al caer la tarde, cuando los negocios se cerraban y el tráfico disminuía junto con el calor de bochorno, las familias sacaban sus mecedoras y butacas a las aceras para las amenas tertulias entre vecinos. Toda aquella vida quedó se pultada entre una inmensa polvareda, los edificios se quebraron por el espinazo, las casas de adobe sucumbieron sin remedio, y el terremoto cobró una cifra de vidas que nunca fue determinada...
