El acelerado desarrollo de las ciencias en general y la biomédica y la
genética en particular, plantea al mismo tiempo una serie de beneficios,
desafíos y amenazas para el ser humano y para el bios. Nuestras sociedades
están inmersas en la tecnología y la biotecnología le ha permitido al ser hu-
mano adentrarse en los llamados misterios de la vida dada la disponibili-
dad tecnológica y los avances científicos que permiten día a día, que el
hombre investigue sobre la vida y la muerte sin el temor de hace cientos de
años atrás, recorriendo así un camino que promete futuro y que no parece
tener fronteras.
La enciclopedia de Bioética de Nueva York (1978) define la bioética
como: “Lo studio sistematico della condotta umana nell´ambito della scien-
za della vita e della cura della salute, in quanto questa condotta é esamina-
ta alla luce dei valori morali e dei principi” (Reich, 1978:195). Por otra par-
te, definiciones como la presentada en el Dizionario de Bioética (1994),
han relacionado a la bioética con la filosofía de la praxis biomédica al mis-
mo tiempo que la definen como un sector de la ética que estudia los pro-
blemas inherentes a la tutela de la vida física y en particular de las implica-
ciones éticas de la ciencia biomédica.
