The Transversality of English in Integral Higher
Education Training

Resumen
La enseñanza del INGLÉS con Fines Específicos (IFE) surge en la Univer-
sidad del Zulia (LUZ) como respuesta a las necesidades de los estudiantes de ma-
nejar textos de su especialidad en inglés. Esta investigación analiza la posicionali-
dad de la transversalidad del IFE en la formación integral a desarrollar en LUZ.
Se realizó un arqueo bibliográfico curricular desde el currículo integral hasta el de
por competencias, sustentado por Polo (2006), Canquíz e Inciarte (2006), Bravo
(2007), Tobón (2005), Delors (1999), Morín (2000), entre otros. La investiga-
ción es descriptiva, no experimental, de campo, desarrollada bajo el paradigma
cualitativo. Se trabajó con 37 profesores de IFE de las distintas facultades de
LUZ, representando el 100% de los profesores que dictaban IFE durante el 1er.
Período 2010. La recolección de datos se realizó a través de una encuesta estruc-
turada para los docentes y una matriz de análisis para los programas de estudio.
Se calculó el coeficiente de confiabilidad con el método Alfa de Cronbach, resul-
tando moderadamente confiable con valor de 0,85. El análisis de los datos se rea-
lizó con la estadística descriptiva utilizando medidas de tendencia central, posi-
ción, dispersión y análisis de varianza. Los resultados evidencian que es favorable
el posicionamiento de la transversalidad de IFE en el currículo integral de LUZ.
Sin embargo, según el análisis de contenido, los procesos de pensamiento que es-
tán limitando tal inserción son el pensamiento creativo, el pensamiento crítico y

la solución de problemas; así como también están ausentes los valores de respon-
sabilidad, ética y el amor por el saber los cuales deben estar explícitos en los pro-
gramas de inglés. Se propone rediseñar los pensa de estudio de todas las carreras
de LUZ para el posicionamiento de la transversalidad de IFE en función de mejo-
rar la performance académica-social de sus estudiantes.

Abstract
The teaching of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) arose at the University
of Zulia (LUZ) in response to student needs to deal with English texts from their
fields of specialization. This research analyzes the transversality of ESP in the
integral training being developed at LUZ. A bibliographic curricular search was
carried out, from integral curriculum to competency-based curricula, supported
by Polo (2006), Canquíz and Inciarte (2006), Bravo (2007), Tobón (2005),
Delors (1999), Morin (2000), among others. The research is descriptive, of the
non-experimental, field type, developed under the qualitative paradigm. The
study worked with 37 ESP teachers from different schools at LUZ, representing
100% of all ESP teachers during the 1st period in 2010. Data was collected using
a structured survey for the teachers and a content analysis matrix for the syllabus.
The reliability coefficient was calculated using the Cronbach Alpha method; it
proved to be moderately reliable, with a value of 0.85. Data analysis was carried
out with descriptive statistics, measuring central tendency, position, dispersion
and variance analysis. Results show that the transversal positioning of ESP is
favorable in the integral curriculum at LUZ. However, according to content
analysis, the thinking processes limiting such insertion are creative thinking,
critical thinking and problem solving. Also, the values of responsibility, ethics
and love for learning, which should be explicit in English programs, are absent.
Recommendations are to redesign the curricula for all fields of study at LUZ in
order to position ESP transversally to enhance students’ academic-social
performance.

Introducción
En los últimos tiempos, la educación ha evolucionado desde la noción de
calificación profesional a la noción del currículo por competencias que incluya la
transversalidad, ya que, la educación debe desarrollar el potencial creativo del ser
humano para el ejercicio de su personalidad en una sociedad democrática basada
en la valoración ética del trabajo.
