RESUMEN
El turismo en esp acios rurales tiene características diferenciadoras que lo hacen propicio para
el desarrollo de las comunidades. Estas potencialidades desde el enfoque de género permitirían
superar las asimetrías sociales de la mujer rural y lograr pleno desarrollo de sus capacidades a
través de proyectos articuladores. Lo anterior tienen mayor vigencia en América Latina y el
Caribe, región más desigual del mundo y donde el turismo en espacios rurales se erige como
una oportunidad de crecimiento y desarrollo local. Se planteó como objetivo del estudio:
establecer los fundamentos de las articulaciones entre desarrollo comunitario, turismo en el
espacio rural y géne ro en América Latina y el Caribe. El estudio clasificó como descriptivo con
aporte teórico. Para la obtención de resultados fueron aplicados métodos teó ricos y empíricos,
fundamentalmente el análisis documental clásico. Se identificaron las contradicciones existentes
sobre el desarrollo comunitario en América Latina y el Caribe enfocado en el turismo en espacios
rurales y desde un enfoque de género. Se concluyó que las interacciones entre desarrollo local
y el turismo en el espacio rural con enfoque de género, pueden ser más sostenibles en la
perspectiva del autodesarrollo comunitario. La importanc ia de la transversalización del género
en los proyectos de desarrollo comunitario emerge como uno de los elem entos que permite el
desarrollo del sujeto colectivo de manera integral. Uno de los mayores retos del desarrollo local
es precisamente la articulación entre sus dimensiones en la construcción simbólica que alude al
conjunto de atributos socioculturales que se dificulta por las problemáticas de género.

Tourism in rural spaces with a gender approach: principles for carrying out community
self-development projects
ABSTRACT
Tourism in rural areas has differentiating characteristics that make it conducive to the
development of communities. These potentialities from the gender perspective would allow to
overcome the social asymmetries of rural women and achieve the full developmen t of their
capacities through articulating projects. This is more valid in Latin America and the Caribbean,
the most unequal region in the world and where tourism in rural areas stands as an opportunity
for growth and local developmen t. The study's objective was to establish the foundations of the
articulations between community development, tourism in rural areas, and gender in Latin
America and the Caribbean. The study was classified as descriptive with theoretical contribution.
To obtain results, theoretical and empirical methods were applied, fundamentally the classic
documentary analysis. T he existing contradictions in community development in Latin America
and the Caribbean focused on tourism in rural areas and from a gender perspective were
identified. It was concluded that the interactions between local developmen t and tourism in rural
areas with a gender approach could be more sustainable from the perspective of community self-
development. The importance of gender mainstreaming in community development projects
emerges as one of the elements that allow the development of the collective subject in an integral
manner. One of the biggest challenges of local development is precisely the articulation between
its dimensions in the symbolic construction that alludes to the set of sociocultural attributes that
is made difficult by gender issues.

Introducción
América Latina y el Caribe (ALC) como espacio de interacción es la región con más
desigualdades en el mun do. La práctica del turismo en ALC ha sido de poca inversión y se ha
enfocado en la explotación de recursos naturales, esas condiciones ha sido una regularidad en
la mayoría de los países. El turismo como recurso para el desarrollo contribuye al crecimiento
económico y la inversión a nivel local, crea oportunidades de empleo, distribución de rentas e
impulsa otras actividades, como la agricultura, la pesca y la artesanía en las localidades
receptoras.
La actividad turística es una fue nte importante de ingresos, según datos de la Statista
Research Department, esta actividad constituye uno de los renglones que mayor impulsan el
crecimiento del Producto Interno Bruto (PIB) de ALC, contribuyendo a la economía de la región.
En 2019, los países de América Latina y el Caribe recibieron más de 100 millones de turist as
internacionales y generaron más de 100 mil mi llones de dólares en ingresos turísticos. Estos
ingresos son vitales para la economía de la región y ayudan a crear empleo y a reducir la
