La discapacidad auditiva y el docente universitario.
Una realidad poco abordada

RESUMEN
La presente investigación aborda el tema de la discapacidad auditiva desde la perspectiva de dos
docentes que fueron los informantes claves durante el proceso. El eje central del estudio fue
considerar los significados que atribuye el personal docente al estudiante con discapacidad audi-
tiva de la Escuela de Trabajo Social perteneciente a la Facultad de Ciencias Jurídicas y P olíticas
de la Universidad del Zulia. La información se obtuvo a través del método hermenéutico- dialéc-
tico, que permitió conocer las creencias que tienen los docentes hacia este grupo social. Toman-
do en cuenta el ámbito de la vida universitaria del estudiante con discapacidad auditiva como
punto de partida, el análisis de los resultados obtenidos por medio de los testimonios de los in-
formantes claves, evidencian que: existen actitudes peyorativas como: estereotipos, prejuicios
y discriminación, hacia este grupo de estudiantes; el Estado deberá velar porque se de cumpli-
miento a la Ley, procurando que se ejecuten todos los programas diseñados para personas con
discapacidad auditiva; las personas con discapacidad desarrollan habilidades acorde a sus nece-
sidades, diferentes a las personas que no presentan discapacidad. Según los docentes de la Es-
cuela de Trabajo Social de la Universidad del Zulia, existen creencias negativas hacia el estu-
diante con esta discapacidad. La Universidad hace esfuerzos para que se dé cumplimiento a las
leyes, sin embargo estos no son los suficientes para garantizar el egreso del estudiante con dis-
capacidad auditiva. Además, este estudiante desarrolla un nivel de autoestima elevado, compro-
bando que sus logros han sido obtenidos con esfuerzos, logrando así una actitud optimista.

Hearing disability and the university teacher. A reality often non attended
ABSTRACT
This investigation focuses on the topic of hearing impairment from the perspective of two teach-
ers who were key informants in the process. The focus of the study is to consider the meanings
that teachers attributed to the hearing impaired student in the School of Social Work belonging
to the Faculty of Law and Political Sciences at the Universidad del Zulia. The information was
obtained through the hermeneutic-dialectic method, getting to know the beliefs that teachers
have towards this social group. Taking into account the scope of university life of students with
hearing impairment as a starting point, the analysis of the results obtained through the testi-
mony of key informants show that: there are pejorative attitudes such as stereotypes, prejudice
and discrimination towards this group of students, the State must ensure the compliance of the
law, trying to run all programs designed for people with hearing disabilities, persons with dis-
abilities develop skills according to their needs, different from people who have no disability .
According to the teachers of the School of Social Work at the Universidad del Zulia, there are
negative beliefs toward the student with hearing impairment. The University makes efforts to
ensure the compliance of these laws, but these are not sufficient to ensure the graduation of
students with hearing impairment. This sort of students develops a high self-esteem, finding that
their achievements have been obtained through efforts, and therefore attaining an optimistic
attitude.
